And nothing has changed. Remember that next time they tell you about how much better the city is. Some commercial districts have improved over the last decade or so but the people running the show are the same. This city would elect Kwame K Again if they were allowed to.
Doesn't take a genius to understand the real problem in detroit
All I see is usual American waste- seriously why not recycle MOUNTAINS OF TRASH?
The best thing they can do is put all the best students and teachers in one school and forget the ones who don't give a sh*t about the students.
Half of the adults in Detroit are functional illiterates? Sure looks like the "community" is uninterested in fixing the education crisis, the church is empty. Drugs were the beginning of the downfall of black communities everywhere. They became violent, causing white flight and the downward spiral continued. Research who brought drugs to the inner cities. It's not who you think.
It looks like the board is not even paying attention at all! They look bored.
America can’t fix the education problem. Should be the state’s responsibility…. It’s start with the home first. Parents need to be involved with their child’s education.
Dan rather is a national disgrace
THE 1967 RIOTS DONE THE CITY OF DETROIT IN GAMES OVER.
I wonder: Who runs this district? Ah, a school board. Well then, who elects the school board? Ah, Detroiters. The problem is apparent. The solution is too--but voters look for someone to blame, not a way to FIX THE PROBLEM. PS: Parents are the first teachers. They have that child LONG before he's school-aged. Teach them to be learners! If your child is not ready to be a student--well-behaved and intellectually curious, he's not going to get the education taxpayers are paying for.

Bring vocational traing back to the High Schools. Nursing, auto machanics, carpentry.welding, culinary arts. etc..
Anyone can see that things will never change. This will only continue to gradually worsen over the years
Stop allowing whites to tell you what to teach your children. If you see they aren't teaching your children reading, teach them how to read. Stop giving them phones and allow them to use their minds. Your brain won't work if the phone does all the thinking for it. Detroit is no different where anyone else lives. They want you ignorant with your face in a phone so you won't do any critical thinking.

HDNET in 360p?!? Wtf
I had no idea when I moved from Texas to Michigan that students around the Detroit area have school choice. Teachers unions are the parasite. I can't tell you how many 7th graders I've come upon in my substitute years that cannot read or write. The Texas education system is so much better and it's not Union.
Parents need to be held accountable
It’s just a lack of discipline, from all involved.
After seeing this, I will never complain again at my daughter’s school (in the Netherlands). Compared to this, we live in paradise while the schools budget is a lot less but wayyyyy better spend. And which is just a 200 yard walk from home!
Too MANY DISTRACTIONS
I luv Dan Rather hes tremendous ❤
No he’s not, all he does is cry about Trump now.
Here in 2024 and unfortunately it's only gotten worse and the whole country is very similar to this! It's not just because of the pandemic either!
geez and I thought I had it rough in my schools.. not even close to what these parents and students have had..it's a very corrupt city and school board that seems to me and that seems to be the way things are all over this once great country of ours now days.. not just in Michigan but lots and lots of other places. Thanks Dan, for showing us a little insight into what it really is like.
11 years later black lives appeared and what did they do play stole from their own people to line their own pockets this is an internal problem
Sorry it's not the school's problem it's a single black mothers that do not discipline their children and make them go to school and when they do go to school they disrupt everybody else these are facts
Where is Deanna’s father? Enormous problem number 1.
I grew up on Lumpkin if you from the D . You know how rough it is
He's right the Board of Education, City Council are interested in maintaining the status quo. Maybe the New Mayor can change this. Parents, if your child is a nuisance they got to go. Alternative schools are open.
These kids can't read, count or structure a paragraph. It's a shame. Generations are repeating the process. Children are having illiterate children.
Y'all know what's wrong. Your officials will not Demand the assistance you need. You are never going to catch the Suburbs without money. Next, you must purge kids who are hindering the other children because they are too far gone. Opt them for GED. Update all systems in the city schools, including security, new books, training for teachers, limit City council intervention. Parents must be involved. I was part of what you see, from Fitzgerald to Brandenburg in Southfield. We were attacked. I already had a 3.2 GPA. Upon going to Post Junior High, bullies attacked us. At Cooley High School the same thing. I barely graduated. The environment was dangerous. I held on. My best friend left and went to Cass Tech. Wish I would have gone too😡😭😭 After 30 years it's now worse.
The? Liberals that ran Detroit, they wanted us to fix the mess they had in education was caused by These thugs and liars. They let the criminals run the school system. That's the problem they're getting money where they do with it.
Is this shocking. Detroit is ran by blacks. Wvery country rhat is under black leadership is in the toilet. EVERY NATION AND CITY.. THAT BEING SAID HOW LONG DO WE GO, IN WHICH WE IGNORE THIS ISSUE AND PUT THE PROBLEM EVERYWHERE ELSE. THERE IS A PROBLEM IN BLACK CULTURE. THERE IS A PROBLEM.
This is a crock and everyone knows it. Everyone. I was an inner city high school teacher for 10 years including 5 years in Detroit and a few years on the south side of Chicago in a very rough area. You don't know anything about about the state of education in the inner city. Zero! True, the vocabulary, English grammar and conflict resolution skills are deplorable. Thats not the educator's fault. That's the slow disintegration of inner city youth and families over multiple generations perpetuated by lack of parenting skills, lack of parents, lack of home stability. These kids learn from their peers about a lot of toxic behaviors that has become part of their DNA: fighting, belligerence, taunting and tormenting one another, bad skills in conflict resolution, drugs, problems at home, complacency, horrible diet, lack of cleanliness, childish tendencies, lack of common sense, gangs, theft, robbery, homelessness, guns and so forth. Educators can only do so much. The village has got to fix this problem. The parents need to prevent it. The fathers need to be held accountable.
Throughout this whole video there are few mentions of the single parent households and their contribution to this disaster. They highlight a successful single parent family (which there are many) yet ignore the reality that most single parent households struggle to just survive. The "village" that once helped raise children doesn't exist anymore. How we got here is debatable, but one thing is for certain ... Moms AND Dads must raise their children together. Blaming others for your situation helps no one since those perpetrating evil don't care and are rarely held accountable.
Unbelievable. I was a straight-A student throughout elementary and junior-high; I barely graduated from Mumford High in January 1975.
I went to a lot of Detroit public schools I didn’t learn much because of the teachers mostly racism and bullying done on to me because of my skin color and some racist person going and changing my good grades to bad grades because I’m white they didn’t care when I was jumped and bullied I couldn’t Concentrate in Detroit public schools. I’ll did pass a lot of my classes.but some one Intentionally changed my grades and she bragged about it on social media a while back. I am now a college student receiving excellent grades passing all of my courses. I am now 48 years old just now starting my life Detroit public schools has made me look terrible and dumbed me down.
What a disgrace!
I bet 99% of that school board was stealing in line in their pockets. They wouldn't all be so mad at Mr Bob if they had been doing their job correctly with integrity and honesty.
“What’s the frequency Kenneth?”
Wow Robert Bob and the other superintendent are both corrupt? But the school board stays in tack? This is a city govt problem CBS just showed Detroit destroyed 2 generation s of students.
This is sounds like current day Baltimore damn shame
When democrats run things, everything turns to crap.

Very depressing and horrible situation we have. I am so thankful that my experience in DPS was okay. I went to Southeastern High School and graduated in 1989. I was in their honor college prep program, had over a 3 point GPA, went on to 3 colleges afterward and have a degree in Graphic Design. We must've been on the brink of everything going super-downhill and were lucky. My teachers cared, we had proper equipment, our marching band was the best on the eastside, we had essays, labs, activities, and the school building was in nice shape. But this was the late eighties. The kids having sex in classrooms, empty rooms without teachers, drunk teachers with alcohol in the classrooms, all these things are unbelievably terrible and thank God I didn't experience that! The whole DPS needs a "great reset"...a cleansing (if you will). *Update. Don't know if this is good or bad, but the very vocal school teacher in the documentary named "Sherry Gay-Dagnogo" (seen at the 16:20min. mark), is on the current DPS Board (www.detroitk12.org/Page/15200). But her term is ending at the end of this year (Dec. 2024). I don't know if she stayed a beacon of light and did any good, or if she got seduced by the darkside and contributes to the problem. But super glad that Deanna Williams has a doctorate degree and doing fantastic!
This is a sad reality. I think that this is what the federal and state governments are doing to its American citizens every single day.
Democrat progress in all it's glory.
Bill Cosby lmao
I am convinced that at least 30% of the parents and at least 2 board members are mentally challenged. I mean just look at them. One board member's eyes are bucked, teeth hanging out of his mouth, and just listen to his speech.
